Changing Lives---- (Ananya Tyagi) Entry #2

"Were you successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regards to your project? Why do you think they did or did not agree to make a change? What did you learn about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle and how can you more effectively convince people to make a change if you were to do this again?"

I showed four people my project. I checked on all of them and it seemed like they made a difference. Our project was about wasting electricity, etc. One of the people showed me their electricity bill, and there was a big difference in the two, from last month (January) and this month(end of February) They probably agreed to make a change because they want to help the Earth and did not notice what little things they did. I learned that you had to show people what they can do and to make people convinced effectively, you have to really push them in to doing good for the Earth, and then it will become a habbit and they will do it more often.

Change A Little Bit, Okay? -Sara P. #2

"Were you successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regards to your project? Why do you think they did or did not agree to make a change? What did you learn about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle and how can you more effectively convince people to make a change if you were to do this again?"

I was successful in convincing people to change their lives when the saw our movie about global warming and its impacct. In the movie, we talked about how wasting electrcity can cause global warming effecting polar bears and their habitat. They agreed to make aa change becuase they were concerned about the effect of rising temperatures on plants and animals. We were able to convince them to make small changes like turning off lights, unplugging things (printers, computers, coffee makers, etc.) when they're not using it. I can make a diagram of how fossil fuels are burned to make electricity and how it can cause global warming if it continues. In the movie, we could put more details of how wasting electricity causes global warming and how it effects the future.

Changing Lives

When I showed people our project, 3/4 people were convinced about climate change/global warming and it's impacts. I was successful in showing them that they could make changes in their lives. Only one person had to think about it. I think that person did not agree because it takes a lot of character to try and change their routine each day. Most people will not even try. I think I was successful in convincing most of the people because when they saw the project, they learned the impacts of global warming/climate change and were shocked. They admitted that when they heard of marine life impacts, they never stopped to consider it. They told me that they now know the importance of making small changes in their daily lives.
I learned from this experience that when you are trying to convince somebody to do something really big to their lives, you need a big impact about the problem. For example, if you are trying to convince someone to do little things in their lives to halt global warming/climate change, you need to tell them a big impact, such as marine life getting affected. Yes, some people may not care, but others might get frightened. They will vow to make a change in their lives.
If I were to do this project again, I would elaborate more on what was said in the project. I would use more facts and give more reasons why people should make a change.

Oil Depletion --- Siddhi Satheesh Entry #2

During this part of the project, my partner and I were successful in convincing people we interviewed. They seemed very convinced that oil depletion was a problem, and it turned out they were! I think they agreed to make a change because oil depletion is a major crisis which contributes to animal habitats being destroyed by the huge demand of oil . We might be forced to drill where animals live. With so many people using oil the amount of oil we have currently is reducing more and more. With the amount of consumption today, the Co2 and greenhouse gas level are rising. This leads to the Earth becoming warmer and warmer, which is named Global Warming . From this project I learned that it takes a huge amount of hard work, details, real-life examples, and determination to persuade somebody to change his/her lifestyle. If I were to do this again I would have used some persuasive essay skills that we used in Language Arts. For example, I could have used the counterargument to differ what the government and some people think. I could explain the actual state of the planet right now and what we need to do to help. From this project, I belived that I have spread the message that oil depletion is a problem we need to fix now.

One small step for man, one huge leap for humanity---Julie Entry #2

We tried to convince 5 people to change their ways. Luckily 4 people did get convinced and stopped buying too much useless food like junk food, eat less meat, and try to donate to a local food drive. But, one person that we were trying to convince to donate to a food drive was apparently not convinced enough. I think that the 4 people that got convinced got convinced because we didn't just say the facts, we actually tested them out and asked different people about it like:the Safeway manager, Ms.Sun, and the school lunch lady. Also, so that they could feel a little sympathy for the hungry people, we put a little clip in the video with sad music and a little hope in it and with pictures of hungry children in Africa. But I think that the one person didn't get convinced enough because I think that instead of making our film too funny we should have made it more serious so that they will think more seriously about changing their lifestyle.

When Neil Armstrong walked on the moon for the first time, he said "One small step for man, one huge leap for mankind." Just like that, changing your life can be small, but it helps greatly!

We Are Using Too Much Oil!---Akshay B. Entry#2

I was successful in convincing people to change their lives in a way that relates to my topic. They agreed to make a change because they knew what kind of oil crisis we were going through, and they wanted to help. It takes a lot to explain how to persuade people to make changes in their lifestyles, even by a little bit. I should have gave them real-life examples so they could understand the problem better and try to fix it.

Not really successful-Kevin Lin entry#2

Not many people do this in such little time, none of the people actually bought hybrid cars but will probably in the future(one year from now). Even though the hybrid cars use less gas, we will still eventually run of of gas, even if we all drove hybrid cars. Some people don't even care about the environment because gas is expensive enough, so they think they don't have to pay so much money for cars. To persuade people to change the environment is very hard. You have to give a lot of facts. To convince them like for my project I would show them a massive number of how much gas we use every day.

Success! Srikar Boinapally Entry #2

I was successful in having people do eco friendly things, because I was only asking them to do things which were really easy. I think to persuade people to things, you should only ask people to do simple things. This way people can't say I cant do it because its too time consuming and Im very busy. To persuade people you just have to ask for something people can easily do.

Successful Persuading---Jasmine Till Entry #2

"Were you successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regards to your project? Why do you think they did or did not agree to make a change? What did you learn about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle and how can you more effectively convince people to make a change if you were to do this again?"

Yes, I was successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regarding my project. I think they agreed because they felt sorry for all those hungry, skinny, sad looking children in Africa. I learned that if I ever wanted to do persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle I would have to give them a video, or some kind of visual aid so they could see how sad/bad our problem was. We were successful because in all, we tried to convince 6 people, and 4 people actually changed.

A Change That Can Change The World Jorge Lizalde Entery #2

I was lucky to convince my sister, my dad, and my mommy to make a change in their life that can protect the Earth from greenhouse gasses (Carbon dioxide). I think that the reason the people decided to change because they also thought the Earth was also becoming a big burnt meat ball. because of carbon dioxide which is realized into the atmosphere as greenhouse gasses. I think it was hard to convenes people to make a change because they would say "oh" i cant or "oh" im to busy so I had to make allot of counter-arguments. If I were to show them this again I would try to be more mean or more convincing to the people or be more harsh then I was before.

A Change Of Life By Jorge Lizalde Entery # 1

Greenhouse gasses have been an issue many people don't care if it damages the Earth. It is caused by burning fossil fuels an using carbon dioxide someactivities that make greenhouse gas's emissions rise are using the car to much Or using allot of carbon dioxide. But it gets worse greenhouse gasses would make global warming even woAdd Imagerse then it already is. in case you didn't know this when their is allot of global warming it gets really hot which causes allot of animals to die or ruin their homes. It can also kill plants and HUMANS. But we can all make a diffrence and start using less carbon dioxide. Thier are many ways to use less carbon dioxid like driving less or lets you have a nieghbor and her son and yours go to the same school they can carpool instead of having another car on the road. And finally you can controll or limit the population of your state or country. You can also plant alot of trees because TREES clean carbon dioxide.

Energy Efficient Appliances - Joseph Liu Entry #2

My group focused on energy efficient appliances like CFLs, rechargeable batteries, and solar panels. I didn't have to persuade my parents to get CFLs because nearly ALL of our household's lightbulbs are CFLs. I knew that solar panels were out of reach because we don't have enough space. The only appliance left was the rechargeable battery. I was successful in convincing my parents to get some rechargeable batteries. I learned that you have to tell the consumer why it saves you MONEY. Nearly everyone LOVES money, so if you tell them advantages that they like, there is a good chance that they will agree. I told my parents the cheap price on Amazon and how a rechargeable battery saves money even though it seems more expensive. They agreed to buy it. :)

Not to successful Jared Tseng entry 2

Since our project was viewed by 118 people, we just asked everyone if they did anything. Very few did actually donate an animal. I think they didn't make a change because of money problems. Since to donate you need a credit card and I doubt many of them had one. I believe they wanted to but couldn't. I think we could persuade an older audience who could donate with a credit card.

Maybe..but I don't know-Henry Overhauser

My Dad said that as soon as the price and the efficiency with refueling stations is better, he would definitely buy one. My sister said Mommy, whats that? And lastly, My Mom said I just don't think it will work even in in twenty years, and I also fell a lot worse about the environment.

Changing Energy usage to Solar Panels or Something Else Eco-friendly - Michelle Rao Entry #2

Were you successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regards to your project? Why do you think they did or did not agree to make a change? What did you learn about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle and how can you more effectively convince people to make a change if you were to do this again?

I was not successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regards to our group's project. My mom said that we are a looking for a house to buy and when we buy a house, we won't have enough money to but solar panels, hybrids, etc. I learned that it is very hard to persuade people to make a change when it could affect their entire life. I think we can more effectively convince people to make a change if we were to do this again if we faced everyone we were convincing as an entire group. Also, we can give more PROS and emphasize the differences we can make to help the earth.

Changing energy source and usage- Sanika M. Entry #2

We asked our audience to research what they could do to change their energy source, and change it if possible. Since we knew that many people do not have that option, we also asked them to reduce their electricity in other ways, like change lightbulbs to CFL's, or use a hybrid car, etc. For the change the energy source aspect, we werent' too successful. Our audience did research what they could do, but none actually changed their energy source. However, one person did change a few lightbulbs to CFL, and already had a hybrid car. And I think they were inspired a little to make some changes because of our movie. But I learned that it takes a big problem for people, especially since changing energy sources can be so expensive. Global warming is a problem, but people won't be obliged to help until something major happens because of global warming. Telling them what might happen doesn't always help. Next time, we should include in our movie what has already happened, and also how it directly affects or will affect the person. This will drive them to make a change.

Usage of solar panels---Tom Liu Entry #2

"Were you successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regards to your project? Why do you think they did or did not agree to make a change? What did you learn about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle and how can you more effectively convince people to make a change if you were to do this again?"

Overall, I was not successful. My parents disagreed because they said it was way to expensive. I told them it will pay off after eight years, but they said NO. They said eight years was way too long. Plus, they said they said they didn't have the time or extra money to do so. I learned that it is very hard to persuade people, and you have to have ideas that others cannot argue against. It takes a long time to change how you live, and in order to really persuade people, always let them know the PROs, not the CONs. In order to persuade people more efficently, you need to have a better persuading prop and PRACTICE. Practice, practice, and practice. Practice makes Perfect.

What We Can Do

To prevent global warming, there are some things we can do. One of them is not wasting electricitiy. You maybe wondering how is electricity going to solve the problem. Here's how. If we use less electricity, then fossil fuels will be burned to produce it. If fossil fuels are burned, then greenhouse gases will be emitted. When greenhouse gases are in the atmosphere, the heat is trapped in the air, causing it to raise the temperature. As many of you know, global warming is when the Earth heats up. But, if we reduce burning of fossil fuels, less greenouse gases will be emitted, so reducing global warming. Some ways you can conserve electricity are to make sure you turn off lights and any electronics when not in use. Also, you can use energy efficient light bulbs, LED bulbs to save electricity. Take plugs out from the electric outlet for computers and T.V. Open the curtains when it's sunny out instead of using lights.

Natural Resources Blog Reflection-Jyothi Entry #2

When we performed our presentation to our audience, they agreed to make a change. I think they agreed because they wanted to save the Earth from global warming so they decided to make a change.I realized that its really hard to make someone change their lifestyle because they have so many," Why should we do this?" or " How will doing this help?" Sometimes these questions are easy to answer and sometimes their not. It just depends on the topic. If I were to do this again I would put more reasons and more shocking reasons so they will have to change their lifestyle.

Use less water-Durga Entry #2

Prompt:
"Were you successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regards to your project? Why do you think they did or did not agree to make a change? What did you learn about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle and how can you more effectively convince people to make a change if you were to do this again?"
Answer:
When my group presented to their own parents they did make a slight change...at least my parents. I think they did agree to make a change because they wanted to learn how to save the Earth. They did it also because they wanted to get used to using less water since that was our topic, World Thirst. To convince the audience I tell about the future. What would happen if you did not do it. I even persuade them by telling that everybody is doing it so you should do it too! That is how I convince my audience. Overall, my presentation was a success!

Water Distribution---Sneha Ramesh Entry #1

Sorry this is a bit late........ ;)
I think the most important piece of information that I have learned would probably be that water distribution ISN'T EVEN around the world, and is causing major problems, and death around the world. I want everybody to know that even simple changes such as not wasting water and turning off the faucet when you brush your teeth in the morning is a gigantic change, and it can make a big difference. So I'm just saying that simple changes can lead to big differences. =)

Change to Energy Efficient Things -- Jeffrey Su Entry #2

I was successful in convincing people to change what they did in their lives. I successfully convinced my dad and mom to start the use CFL's and rechargeable batteries. I think that agreed to change because I told them that they were using lots of electricity, and most of the electricity is made and produces lots of pollution. I also told them that they could save lots of money. At first, CFL's may seem to cost a lot, but in the end you profit in money. After, I told my parents that they can save thousands of dollars if they do one thing. Rechargeable batteries. I found out that a pack of four AA batteries cost $10. A charger cost $20. So in all, a set cost $30. A pack of four disposable Duracell batteries cost $4. Eight cycle of Rechargeable batteries would still have used $30. By the eighth cycle for disposable you would have used $32. After 50 cycles, which is 10% of a rechargeable batteries life, you would still have used only used $30. For the disposable after 50 cycles you would have used $2000! This is how much you can save with rechargeable batteries. When a rechargeable battery finally runs out of life, it would have reached 500 cycles, and only used $30 dollars. While for the disposable batteries, you would have spent $2000! If you buy a pack of 20 batteries you can save about $38600. By buying 1000 batteries, (which can last a very long time) you can save almost 2 million dollars. Of course, this will last a very long time. An important thing I learned in convincing people is saying something about danger and money. Being in danger always catches the readers attention, but money captures even more. One thing that people most care about is money, so saying something about saying money will really effect them. An more effective way to convince people is to talk more about what is going to happen to their child and money. I told my parents lots of thing about money, but not as much about children and money. Something that people care even more then money is probably their children. They always want their children to be safe. So when you tell them to use energy efficient things, tell them that making the energy is producing lots of pollution which is contributing to global warming. If they don't try to help, their children could be in danger.

Overcoming Air Pollution and lead a healthy life --- Abishak Govindarajan

Air Pollution is a growing hazard and degrading our health life. When I tried to convince people, couple of people accepted on the suggested solutions and some were arguing for alternate solutions. Of course, there are n number of ways are available to reduce pollution. The main stress on my research and movie is on automobile pollution, which contributes mainly for pollution compared to other pollutions.
On controlling pollution in the automobile too, there are many ways to control it. Everyone has there own options / opinions. Hence, by the way of statistics and information through reliable sources, I convinced the people.
The reliable information on solutions to overcome Air Pollution with the numbers and statistics, I strongly believe in conviencing the people to make the change in their lives, leading to a healthy and happy life.

Stop World Hunger-Shilika Blog Entry #1

I think the single, most important piece of information I learned and I think every one should know is that:

Around the world, one child dies every five seconds because of hunger. That means 16,000 kids dies every single day because of the lack of food. That is a lot of the world’s population.

Because of uneven distribution of food, so many people are starving. Due to that, many people are dying. The uneven distribution of food effects kids across the world. There are places on this earth where humans die of hunger. On the other hand, there are places that have so much food that people waste a lot of it. Many see the news in the newspaper, or magazines, and also the television. Millions of hearts are touched, but very little effort is taken to prevent this from happening. Many don't even try to help. That is why Anushka, Tania, and I at least tried to make a difference even though we couldn’t do much. It shows that we care a lot. in the future, we will keep this idea in our hearts and if someone comes to us for help, we will for sure help them as much as we can to our ability.

Stop World Hunger---Shilika Entry #2

I was unsuccessful in trying to convince people to change their minds to help stop world hunger. My groups project topic was actually hard to set up. We had to take many steps to see if we could help:
1) We had to go talk to the staff of Target, Safeway, and Whole Foods to see if they could give us an opportunity to make a difference.
2) We had to get a school letter with signatures of our teacher, vice principal, and/or principal to show proof that we are working in order to make a difference.
3) We had to fill out a form that they gave us to provide information for them, such as the charity we want to support and our personal information (age, school, address, etc.).
4) We had to get others to help us achieve our goal which was to help make a difference in the uneven distribution of natural resources, specifically food.

I think that our idea would have been very effective if people were willing to help us. Our idea took a lot of work so I think many were lazy to help or they had no time. As an example, the stores wanted a school letter. unfortunately, the Yosemite trip clashed with our project timings. Our vice principal was busty helping with the trip so he could not make a letter for us. Also, when I spoke to my parents they said that they could definitely help but I needed a larger group/community to make things work. Every cent counts, but the community was not responding positively.

It is easier to persuade people for things that benefit them. On the other hand, if there is extra work or money help needed it is very hard to convince people and to make them participate. i have learned that to persuade someone, you must have more solid proof that makes sure that the charity will go to the ones who need it.

Car/Gas Replacement- Parth Baokar Entry #2

Were you successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regards to your project? Why do you think they did or did not agree to make a change? What did you learn about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle and how can you more effectively convince people to make a change if you were to do this again?

I was partially successful in assuring this. The answer was a half and half. I checked back with my parents if they actually made a change. I got an answer of "there is a 50/50 chance that we do buy a hybrid". I don't think they were able to make a change because buying a hybrid car is too expensive. Also I don't think anybody will buy a hybrid just a few days after your presentation unless you're lucky that person was originally planning to buy one. To find a new source of fuel is also hard. My parents stock up in a local gas station. I'm positive that no parent will go out of the local area just to find an alternate fuel source. To convince a person you need hardcore evidence I would want to annoy the person into doing the job if I redid the presentation. It is very much like repetitively asking your mom for candy. When she finally gets very annoyed she gives in and gives you candy.

Please switch your lights!---Rishan Girish Entry #2

Sadly, my audience didn't pay heed to our movie and didn't switch out their bulbs to fluorescent ones.I think they said that they will do it just because they didn't want me to feel bad. I think people need way more reasons and deals to get them to do something. Next time, I might listen to one of those salesmen who blabber about how good their product is and sort of imitate them while presenting.

Convince People to Save Electricity---Jennifer So Entry#2

My project convinced some people into changing their lives to save electricity. One person disagreed about changing their life because they are in a habit of leaving stuff on and not turning it off. This person is not being responsible for the Earth's health. I learned that convincing somebody can be frustrating. I can be more specific by showing graphs and facts on the internet to convince more people that may not agree.

Save the Earth---Edmund Ju Entry #2

I was not successful in convincing people to change their lives by driving less. I think they did not agree to make a change because walking is slow and driving is fast. Maybe they had a very tight schedule so they thought they needed to save time. They also might have thought that since I only showed my project to a few people, the amount of emissions released into the air will only be reduced by a little bit. Or maybe they were selfish and didn't care about future generations. What I learned about trying to convince people to change their live is that it is really hard. Since I showed my project to old people, changing what they have been doing for such a long time is really hard. What I would have done to more effectively make others change is by exaggerating a little on facts.

Replace Fossil Fuels--Bill Huang--Entry#2

What did you learn about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle and how can you more effectively convince people to make a change if you were to do this again?"

I was succeful in convincing people to make a change in their lives with my projects solution of wind energy. They liked the fact they can save up to 84 thousands dollars in a long term. Also, they were spooked by the fact of possible scenarios if America keeps on using fossil fuels, making them want to use others alternatives.

I effectively convince people to make a change better if I were to do this again of making a solution for suatible for the weather. In cupertino, there isn't a lot of wind.

"A Change that makes a Difference--Elizabeth Duan entry #2"

I wasn't successful to convince people to make a change in thier lives. I don't think they did anything because buying and installing solar pannels is expensive and takes a lot of time. Persuading people is hard because unless it is something easy to do, such as walking to school once in a while, most people don't have time to do things. One effective way persuade people is to show people the results if they don't help. You can tell them how global warming might melt polar ice caps and drownd lower areas. That might scare them into helping.

climate change--- mira entry # 2

What did you learn about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle and how can you more effectively convince people to make a change if you were to do this again?"

I was successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regards to my project. I think they agree to make a change because they are simple everyday changes like picking up trash or carpooling. The people who i spoke to first seemed uncertain and thought changing their life style would be complicated and difficult. i convinced them that it is nothing big it can be as easy as picking up garbage. So they agreed on trying to change some things.
To more effectively convince people i would talk ride my bike to their house and/or show them more examples and bring props to show along side the video so they understand what they need to change.

Making a change " Jongho weon - entry #2 "

When I told other people about the issue, they were shocked. But that didn't make them make a change. I either think it is because I wasn't convincing enough, or they thought it was a hard task and they were too lazy to do it. But when I got back to them for the third time, I explained to them how eaisy it was. Then for the fourth time I got back to them, they had made a change. I was glad I had made a change in their lives. Then later they told me that they had seen the amount of money they saved. And with that money, you can do a lot more things for just making a simple change. I learned that a little more explaining can make a big diffrence.

Dont waste your food! - Peri Cabrales Entry #2

Question: " Were you successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regards to your project? Why do you think they did or did not agree to make a change? What did you learn about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle and how can you more effectively convince people to make a change if you were to do this again.

Answer: For my project, I was successful in making people change their ways in food waste and buying food because of the persuasive things I said in my project.
I made 2 people say they would make a change in their lives because of my project. The third person did not agree because they already do the things I wanted people to do. I wanted the people to only buy as much food as they will eat, and not any more. If the people buy morre than enough food, they will throw away half eaten food because they anren't hungry.
I learned that to persuade people to listen, you need to grab their attention and say all of the data/information that the people need to know. My data/information is that people shouldn't buy any more than the food they need. When people throw away food that they don't eat, it deprives the people in need of it. It will also make our dumps bigger, which means that a lot of land will then be turned to dumps. That won't help the enviroment though, will it?
If I were to do this project again, I would make it so that their attention would be focused on listening to what I have to say about this problem/solution. I would make it so people aren't waiting for my movie or slideshhow to be through with because they are so bored (I'm not saying they were bored!). I will make it so they will also be asking for me to replay it over again, so they can remember what they are supposed to do to help the enviroment.

What to choose? --- Elaine Wang Entry #2

NRGI Project Entry #2

We were not exactly successful in convincing people to make a change... Our goal was hard to convince someone to do in what, 1-2 weeks? They had to change their way of transportation into greener methods such as walking or driving hybrids. Walking or biking to school may be easier, but changing to a hybrid car?! Unless they were already planning beforehand it would be nearly impossible for them to go ahead and buy a hybrid just because of our website. One of the people we were trying to convince does so already, but then again that's not really changing. It's just "I already do that". I think out website lacked a lot of components that would make it look more interesting and make people go "ZOMG! SO PRO!". There was no music, no cool backgrounds, and only one video. I honestly wouldn't know how to convince someone of a decision like this in the time we had. For example, if I asked my dad "Can we get a hybrid?" He would just say "What? Why do we need to buy a hybrid, it's just a waste of money." and walk away. I would show him the website and he probably wouldn't even look at it or he would just laugh. That verses "Dad, can I walk to school everyday?" That statement would make him the happiest person on earth. As you can see, HUGE difference. Still, consider what YOU doing something like THAT could do to the earth.

"GIANT PROBLEM- world hunger" San Kim Entry #2

I was successful in making other people make a change in their lives, since we gave some strong, persuasive, and sad facts that probably made them feel a tiny bit (at least) ashamed. It wasn't soo demanding or ridiculous either. That is why I think that they agreed to make a change in their lives. One affective way to persuade someone is by putting heartbreaking/persuasive facts to get them all sympathetic or teary eyed, then tell them how they can help, and pretty soon, they will go on the website or way to help that we offered them, then they even might be helping out daily! If i could do this again, to make my peers be even more sympathetic, I would add a really hungry kid who is really skinny, even add dramatic tone to my voice while I am presenting, or simply give them more ways to help.

I was successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives mainly because most of the people were already recycling, but it was not sufficient to make Earth a better place. The main reason reason they recycled more was because of our presentation. They were impressed about the many advantages of recycling we listed in our presentation. We also convinced them easily by telling them that all you need to do is put some "paper in the bin." In fact, after we checked back with them, we found out that they were recycling about twice as much as they used to. I learned that you not only need a convincing presentation, but you need to actually understand what you researched. This is because in our "conversation" with the first group, we showed the video first, and we could tell that they were not convinced to make the change. Only when we spoke about it ourselves, they pledged to make the change. If I were to do this again, I would have reduced the number of unnecessary facts and replaced them with necessary ones.

You Can Make A Change As Well - Samruddhi Deshpande Blog Entry #2

What did you learn about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle and how can you more effectively convince people to make a change if you were to do this again?"

Answer:

I was successful convincing my mom and dad to make a change by stop wasting water. They agreed to make a change because they already know that water is being wasted all around the world and many people are dying because there is not enough water. I learned that when persuading people to make a change you need have great supports and strong opinions. If I was to do this over the thing I would do is change the supports and make them stronger than they already are to convince more people to make a change . SAVE OUR PLANET KEEP IT GREEN MAKE SURE ALL YOUR WATER'S CLEAN . This change of using less water can help us safe this planet for eternity . So go ahead and make change that will help people all around the world live safely like us.

Saving the planet can save you as well!!!!

I enjoyed a mediocre success in changing the actions of the people to whom I presented. I think that I was not able to convince them fully because they felt that what I was presenting did not apply to them personally, although they agreed they would have done something if they could. Instead, I should have presented to someone in a government position who is able to better instigate the ideas my project is covers with, which mostly do not concern the average citizen except for petitions and votes to create action in the government. I learned that in order to create action, you need a strong presentation as well as a strong documentary. If I were to do this again, I would address a person in a position of governmental power with this issue instead of an ordinary citizen. This would probably result in a better outcome.

Seeds and animals Jared Tseng Entry 1

I think the most important thing i learned was that if you send a animal such as a chicken, to a poor family then they have eggs, money (if they sell the eggs), and meat, plus something that will last longer then say a basket of potatos. Once you eat the potatos they're gone. or if you send seeds, they have a crop that will keep on growing food. And best of all they reproduce so you can't run of easily.

Yes, I was successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives. Some of our audiences have already made some changes to their light bulbs energy uses. However, they haven't changed all of the light bulbs into CFL. So, their commitment is to change all of their light bulbs into CFL light bulbs. I think they realized they could save a lot more money than if they continued using the old light bulbs. I learned, by pointing out to the audience they can save a lot more money by making changes of their homes. They seem to be more committed to actually putting these words to action, because currently the economy is not doing so well and money is their first priority. If I were to redo this project, I would point out that you could do just small changes, but makes big impact on your electricity bill. This will probably encourage them to complete these steps and help everyone save this planet.

I was successful in convincing people to change their driving habits and become more efficient and/or electric. They were very entertained when watching my video and laughed a lot. I then asked them if they wanted to change their habits of driving. Two of them agreed and the last person disagreed because he said that he "had other things to do". I asked the two other people what they would do to change themselves and one said that he would remind his parents to slow down when they are speeding. I could tell he was determined to help out. Then I asked the next person and he said he would tell his parents to drive in less crowd to save gas. I learned that whatever you are going to present has to be exciting, funny, and entertaining enough to catch the viewers attention. I think next time if I did this, when I ask the viewers what they are going to do to help, I should probably help out the viewer if he is bummed out on what to do to help and give him tips and ideas.

Making my parents change--Andrew

I was sadly not successful in convincing my parents to change their lives by buying electric cars. They didn't agree because they say that buying an electric car was to expensive and that they'd rather just pay for the gasoline. I've learned that I still have to find more information to make my parents change their lives by buying an electric car.

MAKE A CHANGE!!!!- Arad Fotouhi

"Were you successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regards to your project? Why do you think they did or did not agree to make a change? What did you learn about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle and how can you more effectively convince people to make a change if you were to do this again?"
I was very successful in convincing some of the people I showed, which were mostly people I knew. I think some people didn't want to make a change because they were too lazy and didn't bother, they just came to watch it. But some other people had different ideas when they saw it. Some of those people got scared at the last part, when my group member said, "So if you don't listen, good luck staying alive." Those people were the ones who changed their life stile, by all the small steps we gave them for saving water. I think the most important thing to emphasize is the call to action or what you want them to do. Because if you don't tell them what to do there is really no point in trying to persuade them to make a change. Also you could threaten them in a way where they can't get out of it, like the line that my group member said. It's like persuading some to make a change in their life for the better good.

Succesful in convincing people to make a change- Jaehyun Lee Entry #2

I think I was succesful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regards of my project. The people I presented to kind of agreed to make a tiny change in their life after I showed my team's presntation. I told them to use less tools that includes Green House Gases, because it murders animals, and plants. They agreed to use original cars less, because the gases that they let out isn't very helpul to environments. They agreed to walk when they had to walk in short distances, but using cars to travel long distances. They also decided to shop online, because driving cars to there is not helpful to environments. If a store is near by, I told them to not shop online, and walk there. I think this was successful in convincing other people to change in their lives.

To Light or Not to Light? --- Ron Talmor Entry #2

What did you learn about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle and how can you more effectively convince people to make a change if you were to do this again?"

I was moderately successful in improving the lighting at Lawson and at other places. The people who committed to save energy outside of Lawson will probably attempt to save some energy. However, I think that after a while they will just forget to close the lights or set the timer or do whatever they have chosen to do. Thus, I am only moderately successful in improving the lighting efficiency in other places. In Lawson Middle School I also think that we only moderately changed the school. This is because as we were doing our research we found out that Lawson already has extremely energy efficient lights (occupancy sensors in many rooms and energy-efficient lights). So, even if we did change Lawson it would only be a tiny amount because there isn't much to change because (as I have previously stated) they are already making good choices during the light-installation process. Thus, we are again only moderately successful in in improving the lighting at Lawson. While talking to people about improving their lighting I realized several facts. One: they only want to hear good things about why they should change their lifestyle. Two: they don't want to hear bad things about changing their lifestyle. Yes, it is true that this is only one fact, but this fact is so important it had to be mentioned twice! This leads me to how I can more effectively convince people on how to do what we want them to do. It's actually quite simple! All we have to do is tell them what they want to hear! We shouldn't try to disprove that what we say is bad. We should just briefly mention it and not provide too much emphasis on it. Finally, if we were to change what we did I think we should have less talk about the bad parts of each lighting alternative and more parts about the good parts of each lighting alternative. Besides that, every "bad" facts about the product we keep we can counter argue using "good" facts about the product.

We were successful in convincing people to make a change in their life and how they thought that world hunger really was the biggest problem. They looked really interested and got what our point was and they did agree to make a at least small changes in their lifestyle. They said that they might donate some money to these corporations. One thing they said that they already donate food to world hunger associations. I was really happy that if we ca persuade everyone and if they do small things like donating money and food, we can end world hunger forever! I learned that if you take the time to think about things you don't really think about it at all, you can can find many solutions and then you share with them and persuade them. After you persuade them, they will go to their friend and tell them about this problem. This can go on and on and on, forever.

Recycle and buy recycled products - Anirudh Entry #2

What did you learn about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle and how can you more effectively convince people to make a change if you were to do this again?"

I was kind of successful to convince people to make a change. This is so because the people were already recycling everything so they don't need to do any change and to buy recycled products only some of them bought. Also already everyone we tried to convince were recycling so they just recycled more than usual. They might have disagreed with me because the recycled products were expensive and agreed with me to recycle more to save the Earth, our only survivable ecosystem. I learned that I had to talk more about the why, what, and how instead of the uninteresting statistics to help me to be more successful to persuade someone.

So You Think YOU'RE Hungry?-Anushka-Entry #2

So I asked a few people what they thought about world hunger. One or two people seemed actually sad about it..others just didn't care. They cared more about themselves. Not the POOR, DYING, HUNGRY people. Then I showed them our movie. It made some of them actually care! I was pretty surprised, and then I asked them this: If we started a fund raiser of some sort in a grocery store or something, would you donate to help the poor people in Africa, Asia, etc.? To push them a little I told them that when my family lived in Africa,(true fact:D) my mom used to see the hungry people actually take food out of our/our neighbor's garbage can(true fact:D). Most of the people were all like"Yes, of course we would!", but I know that if we actually did it, some people wouldn't even think about donating, and we can't really blame them, because they have their own families to...spend their money on. Some people, though, I could actually tell they cared. They gave me ideas, too. My mom said to ask people to donate money to a charity instead of getting my birthday gifts for my birthday...I said no, but it was a good idea, if you want to do it. Also, some people suggested to sell something in the neighborhood, and give the money to a charity. It was a good idea, and I might actually do it. So, in the end, most people actually seemed to care about world hunger and what we could do about it. :)
If I had to show this to people differently, I would say scarier stuff. More people might care if I told them that every five seconds a kid dies from hunger. Or that America gets more food/resources that a bigger continent, Africa, causing more chances of obesity. Or...well, you get the point. I learned that to persuade people to do what you want, you need to (a) explain it SLOWLY, (b) use convincing words such as: should, must, etc., and (c) use specific facts or statistics that came from a RELIABLE source.

Upgrade your lights please!---Dam Kaliblotzky entry #2

Well, I showed my video to some people. One said that she wanted one of the alternate lighting ideas we showed. Turns out most people already have on of the ideas shown, so they have a head start. They had no objections, but I don't think they will change their lighting any time soon. I think that, like Mr. Sontag said, people will only buy it if they have the budget and it saves them money. Therefore, if I were to redo this, I would find a way to calculate how much money will be saved.

What did you learn about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle and how can you more effectively convince people to make a change if you were to do this again?"

I was successful in convincing my audience to make small changes in their lives to make a huge overall change. For example, if you drive a hybrid, then, less gas is used. This way, the risk of oil spills in the ocean is not as great. My audience listened to m presentation and agreed that if we make these changes, we can make the world a better place. So, they agreed to do their part. One said that she will take shorter showers to use less water, so that less dirty water is poured into the oceans. And the other two said that they will try to bike or walk to run errands instead of getting there by car.
When I checked in with the people I showed my project to, I saw that they actually had made those changes. One person told me that instead of taking 15-20 minute showers, she took 5-6 minute showers. Also, the other two told me that they bike to school. This shows that we can all make a difference very easily!

I was successful in convincing my audience to make small changes in their lives so we can have a double effect: Reduce our dependence on coal and oil as well as helping to improve the hydrogen essay. My audience listened and agreed to make a change because they wanted to save the Earth and the environment. It takes a lot of effort to tell them how bad our crisis is in order to truly have them make a change. I could probably use more examples than just my project such as the energy administration website for my audience to understand the situation.

Reluctant to Change the World? --- Jack Liu #2

When I showed the video to my parents, they didn't seem extremely interested. They were half listening when I was talking to them, and when I asked the next day, they forgot completely. When my mom finally understood, she started saying we didn't need one, and she seemed adamant. So, I didn't get any results from my family. However, when I asked my friend Sushyl, he seemed quite interested. After I explained a little, he liked the idea, and was quite motivated to get a timed wall switch. There were many good signs, so I think I convinced him. Mr. Bowman didn't really need convincing, because we already have occupancy sensors at school.
My mom didn't want to buy a light timer or timed wall switch because she doesn't think we need them. The occupancy sensors and light shelves were too expensive, even with pay-back later on. Overall, I don't think she thought it was such a big deal. My friend likes the idea of timed wall switch as a timer, and said it would be useful for his family.
I learned that people can be quite adamant, and that being cost-effective is an extremely important factor when advertising/selling/convincing. I would have to convince my mom that we really do need something to help us remember, and that it's not a waste of money. Therefore, I would have to give true evidence about light timers' affect on households, and that we do forget to turn lights off sometimes. I probably must also drill in the fact that light timers cost around three dollars, and that money will be gained back in no time. In a nutshell, I need to emphasize the low price and effectiveness of my "products" and the ineffectiveness of current methods most/more.

Distribution of Water---Sneha Ramesh Entry # 2

I think our presentations to people were successful because people I presented it to actually understood that I was trying to help water distribution, and conserve our water resources. I was hoping that people would try their best to help stop UNEVEN water distribution around the world, because the simple and easy tasks I had given them to do, wouldn't take much time, and I was expecting that atleast 1-2 people that I told it to would help. I learned a lot in what it takes to persuade people into making simple changes in their life. Many people are very stubborn, and won't do things told. A couple of people I told it to told me "I don't have much time; or I'm too busy". It took a while until I could get them to do what I wanted, and I hope they'll actually take a step into helping the world. I would be more effective next time while presenting to somebody else by explaining in more depth, or maybe show some more visual aids, or quotes from other people, who are having problems with their water distribution. Visual aids could include posters, maps, drawings, photographs, etc. I hope people really make changes to help stop Uneven Water Distribution Around the World. =)

persuading people---Rohit Tavare entry#2

I was successful in convincing people to make changes in their lives. I think they made those changes because it was easy and they were capable of including them in their daily lives. If I did this again, I would make myself effective by first trying to convince them about the super simple stuff and then move up the chain of difficulty for example, first try convince them about turning off lights that are not needed, then unplugging plugs and useless wires from the wall, and finally, recycling electronic products.

I was successful because my project was a virtual magazine that flip pages digitally with really nice illustrations and bright colors. Also, the changes I expected wasn't big; they just have to replace paper with digital things they already have such as a computer and I believe many already own a laptop or something. Or they could just use less paper. I think if you want to persuade someone, you have to emphasis the pros of the solution and how the problem causes cons. Next time, maybe in the magazine, I could focus 10% more on the solution than the problem because I had 3 pages for the problem, and 4 pages for the solution.

making a change " Jongho Weon-entry #2 "

When I told them about driving smart, and then went back to them, they had not seem to make a change. I don't think they did because they may have saw it as a hard task. So then I told them that it was as simple as 123, they had made at least 1 change of the many possible. I am glad that I had made a change in someones life. I have learned that it is good to change a person to do a good habit because it may effect a life greatly because when I went back to them, they had saved a little more than 1 dollar. And adding that up to years, you could save over 100 dollars.

I think I was successful in persuading people to make a change to save the earth. I think they did agree to make a change because it didn't tell them to do a bunch of big things, however, some people does not want to take of the plug and put it back on every time. I was successful in having people make a change in their lives. I think they agreed because our presentation was informative enough to persuade them to make a difference. I learned that you have to be persuasive and on topic the whole tine you present, but not too serious that your audience falls to sleep. Also you can't just start talking about your topic without showing any examples and checking to see if they understand or not. To be more effective in persuading people to make a change, I would probably try to bring in experts to better explain the dilemma. In addition to bringing in experts, I could probably present in front of a much bigger audience.

Be a Part in Saving the World--Deepika Sriram Entry #2

I was successful in convincing the people to make at least a small change in their every day actions. Those small changes would help make a big difference in the world. They agreed to make a change because the small change is very easy to do and doesn't make their lives any "harder". Sometimes it is hard to persuade people because they are too sluggish to make even the smallest change, but even they can be persuaded if you tell them how it will make their life better. If I were to do this assignment again, I would try and emphasize the main and most important facts of how it would make the world better and how it helps. I would also try to put in more facts about how earth would end up if everyone was too lazy to do something very simple, such as picking up any trash you find on the ground.

I was not very successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regards to my project. I think that they did not agree to make a change was because the changes they could make were too broad. What I learned about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle was that you should persuade them to do something easy, simple, and fast. I can more effectively convince people to make a change if I were to do this again is to persuade them to do something that could benefit themselves, but still be, again, easy, simple, and fast. For example, just being able to unplug any appliances not in use could save lots of money from being spent on your electricity bill. Whereas, trying to convince people to buy a hybrid would be much more difficult.

Yes, I was succesful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regards to my project. I think they agreed to make a change because they learned what not recycling/reusing did to the environment, and since they didn't want that to happen, they started recycling and reusing. I learned that giving statistics helps convince the audience member. Also, I did my project on GoAnimate, so it was a representation of how life would be if we made it a better place, and followed the solution. Taking small steps Towards Using less Fossil Fuels---Megha Ilango Entry#2

Yes, I was successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regards to my project. I think they agreed to make a change because they realized how much fossil fuels were negatively impacting the environment. Also, I think they agreed to make a change because it was simple and easy to do and did not require a lot of work. Another thing they might have noticed was that they could possibly save money if they took small steps towards using less fossil fuels.
While persuading people to make a change in their lives, I realized that people were more motivated to make a change when I explained the rewards of making a change, such as saving money or helping the environment. I learned that people are more encouraged to make a change when they know they have a good end of the deal.

What did you learn about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle and how can you more effectively convince people to make a change if you were to do this again?"

I was very successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives regards to my Natural Resources/Global Issues Project. I think the people we asked to make a change in their lives agreed because our theory was that taking small steps could help the environment. Our solution was that every person could make a few small changes towards conserving energy/electricity. This way, when we tried to convince people to make a change, they would think, "That's it? Then why don't I do make that simple change?" Then, they would not be as hesitant to make a change because they would think it will be easy to do.
I learned that when you try to persuade audiences about doing something huge to save the world, they will be hesitant to make this/these changes. Why? Well, if you've ever observed, most people like to make or are more comfortable making changes that will not affect their life very much. When you ask people to make a smaller change in their lifestyle, they are more likely to ponder, "Why not? I am helping someone."

After I have blabbered away just now, you might wonder, "So what
IS exactly your point, Anita? So, now finally, I will get to the point in one short sentence(or maybe two). When you, or I, try to convince someone to make a change in their life, ask them to do a small thing. It will be more likely that they will say yes.

I was successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regards to my project. i think they agreed to make a change because I showed them pictures which showed helpless animals and gave statistics that showed how much we were wasting. I learned that facts are not enough: you need to show them what they'll miss if they don't make a change in their lives. I was sort of successful into making people save electricity. Some of the people I showed it to were LAZY to actually unplug things around the house. So I did it for them...sort of. I learned that if you hold something against them, like that the are actually contributing to their own death that they start to actually take notice of what's happening.

"World Hunger, it's a Giant Problem!---Brendan Lin Entry #2

Yes, I was successful in convincing people to change their everyday lifestyle. I think they agreed to change because the methods of helping were not difficult. It simply required them to go online, and do a few things. It didn't need them to do something like buy special lightbulbs, eat only vegetables, send packages to Africa, or anything like that. I learned that you need a lot to change someone's lifestyle. First off, the change can't be too demanding or ridiculous. Then, a helpful thing to do is to show how you can do it. Like if you wanted them to be eco-friendly, you can give a suggestion. You can tell them that just turning off lights works. Then, you can build up to larger things, like buying things that use environmentally friendly materials.

I was not successful in making a change in someones life. We asked Target, Safeway, and Whole Foods to donate 5% of their total money they make in a day and donate it to a charity we found. Unfortunately, they needed a school letter to make sure that we were not fakes. So we asked the principal to make one for us. He could not do that so we couldn't do that idea. So our idea was that if they did agree, we would go to three other people to go to those stores and buy most of their groceries from there. Later, we would ask them to show their receipt. Obviously, that idea didn't work, so we couldn't make a change in a hungry person's life. I learned that in order to make a person to make a change in their lifestyle, the idea has to work, and then try to persuade them. If the idea doesn't work then try another idea that would work, and then try to persuade them. But even though our idea didn't work, you can still make a difference. You can still donate to the poor and that would make a huge difference even though you won't notice it.

NGRI Project- Sai Ravada Blog Entry #2

"Were you successful in convincing people to make a change in their lives in regards to your project? Why do you think they did or did not agree to make a change? What did you learn about what it takes to persuade people to make a change in their lifestyle and how can you more effectively convince people to make a change if you were to do this again?"

I was sort of successful into making people save electricity. Some of the people I showed it to were LAZY to actually unplug things around the house. So I did it for them...sort of. I learned that if you hold something against them, like that the are actually contributing to their own death that they start to actually take notice of what's happening.

World Hunger --- (Raghava Ravi) Entry # 2

Yes I was successful convincing people to help someone in starvation because they agreed to make a change in someone elses lives. They probably agreed to make a change in their lives because many kids are DYING on hunger. To persuade people it takes a long time and a lot of consideration to find a way to convince them. Regardless of the movie I showed them I explained that what IF they were the victims of HUNGER. That is what finally convinced them to make a change in someones life. If i did this again i would probably put more facts and statistics on the amount of hunger in the world.

I think I was successful, because our movie showed what could happen, and I think we scared our viewers. We may have scared them into making a change. It's for a good cause, anyway. I learned that SOME people actually want to live longer on Earth, so they're encouraged to make a difference in their lifestyles. I can probably convince people better by not scaring people into doing what I want, but actually give them more facts.

"Helping the earth --- Pranav M. entry #2"

I was able to convince the people we presented to change their ways. I think they did agree to make a change because they wanted to help the earth by recycling. It takes a lot of facts, statistics, proof, and evidence to convince people to change. If I were to do this again to persuade people, I would give MORE facts/ statistics.

I was really successful in convincing people to change and help solve world hunger. The people that I tried to convince were really happy to help solve such a worthy cause and were even more motivated when they figured out how easy it was to help. They showed that they started helping by searching the internet on neoaid.com, which donates money towards world hunger every time you search something on the website. The first person I showed our project to was a little confused so now I know I have to keep my presentations and projects simple and easy to understand. For the next two listeners, I stopped the movie a couple of times in order to make sure they understood and explained a bit more clearly what point we were trying to give out. The fact that most people like simple and easy things got me to think of making my future projects and presentations easy to understand.
