Grant's idea+My solution?

Hello,
Ok...I sit next to Grant and I heard his idea and I think that it's pretty good and has thought of a solution to go with idea.
His idea: How to reduce paper usage in education.
We all know we use ALOT of paper in education, not just on textbooks, also there are worksheets, notebooks, planners, binder paper and also alot outsuide education. This causes a serious problem---deforestation and trees are really important.
My solution: I know that in Scotland, there is one school where students like don't really bring backpack, they bring Ipads. That is really high tech!
Good qualities:
Less deforestation
Stylish
No more slouching
Overall save money, because ebooks are so cheap since they don't require publishing
...
Overall I think it sounds good, but if I use Grant's idea, wouldn't it be like plagirism. Also, I don't know if I could do a group work with Grant?
And I don't know whether I would be able to convince teachers to allow students to bring Ipads and parents to buy one.
Still, isn't this like an awesome idea?

  1. Hi Shuge,

I like Grant's idea and the solution, but wouldn't some parents oppose the idea of buying iPads for their kids? Each iPad costs at least $500.00, and if you have 2 kids in your family, your parents would have to spend at least $1000.00, not including taxes. Also, I don't think that our teachers and principal would like the idea of kids turning their iPads on and off just to figure out the answer of a single question.

  2. I think its a great idea Shuge! You have a good point but the only problem is what if a parent can't afford an iPad?

  4. I also love the idea and solution! However, as both Claire and Jasmine said, it would be very expensive.

Maybe each student could pitch in $125.00 and find a group of four. If they put their money together, that group could get an iPad. This way, $125 isn't too much and we could still save paper and have iPads! :)

If some people refuse to give $125, they can find their groups of four and share one textbook. This also saves paper, because instead of having one textbook per person, 4 people share one textbook.

Also, there are online textbooks (like our Holt Mathematics books). If each student donates an amount of money, there can be a laptop cart available for each class who needs it. There is also the computer lab. This way, we do not need physical textbooks.

Again, great problem Grant and solution Shuge!

  5. Nice idea Shuge! It really tells us how important it is to not cut down trees. Maybe you could use his idea, it wouldn't be plagiarism unless you didn't give credit to him. Or maybe, you can just change all the words, and make it your own.

  6. Nice idea, Varsha! But, what do we do with all those textbooks that we have in our school? We can't just recycle them all.

  7. I think its a great idea, but how would we convince the school into letting us do this?

  8. Good idea Shuge! Peri, maybe if Shuge does her presentation on that, she can show Mr. Sonntag or someone else her finished project. Like the movie, brochure, or whatever she wants to do.

  9. True Anushka. But where would the money for like over 200 ipads come from?!

  10. Wow! that's a great idea. And since the solution was your idea, maybe it's not plagiarism. Maybe if you got an idea for a problem, that's okay. I think it only matters who had the solution. You should ask Ms. Yong. Also, for Varsha's solution, it's a great idea, but if anyone else used that, that would be plagiarism, I'm pretty sure.

  11. Wow! That is an amazing and thoughtful idea. I am 100% with you and gran, Shuge. I suggest you make a group with him. Both of you have the same idea and both probably know that it will help the world. I agree with Anushka, you can show it to mr.sonntag. he will be impressed.

  12. @Peri: Maybe we could have fund raisers to raise all the money for all the iPads. But I just thought of something else...If Team A has iPads, wont the rest of the school want them, too? Then it might me harder to raise money.

  13. I think that we should just use smaller textbooks. In China, the textbooks are paperback, 6 times 4 inches, which is like one third of our textbooks. Also, they use thinner paper, so that China's textbooks are only 1/2 a inch tall (sideways). Besides, Ipads need electricity, and where does 70% of electricity come from? Power plants!, which consume billions of fossil fuels.

  14. Nice idea, but school funds are already being cut. However, I saw Varsha's idea about handing in $125.00, and that could get expensive for my family, with two siblings to pay for, and one iPad for every student would cost WAY more than $125.00 per kid.

  15. Maybe instead of trying to get the school to get ipads, maybe you can ask kids to bring their ipads and laptops, if they have them. You'll also need to ask teachers if kids are allowed to.

another thing: Even if people have ipads or laptops of their own, their parents probably won't like kids bringing such expensive things to school.

  16. @Jane:You have a point, but, I think using electricity is better than using trees. Plus, we won't need laptop carts. (unless there's some website that doesn't work with ipads)

  17. They should use kindle! it doesn't hurt your eyes because it is all ink. and can last a month wiithout connecting to wi fi.

  18. I don't think it's plagiarism because Shuge gave Grant and Scotland credit, so she is not claiming the idea as her own.

  19. That is an awesome idea Shuge!
    And an awesome problem Grant!

However, I really don't think my parents will buy me a iPad because they already bought me an eReader and a laptop.

But, anyway, that is actually a good problem to think about.

Instead of bringing iPads, can't we just bring regular laptops to school?( Not saying we have to, just an idea cuz I bet a lot of people already have personal computers)

So...yeah...that is a really good idea...
